Kinks & Fetishes – Which kinks need extra safety?
Kinks That Need Extra Safety
Kinks that need extra safety are practices with a real risk of serious harm, like breath play, choking, suspension, electro play, fire play, fisting, sounding and self-bondage, which call for real knowledge, a sober head, an emergency plan and no improvising.
What puts a kink on this list?
These practices can cause lasting harm or even death when something goes wrong, sometimes within seconds and without warning. Breath play and choking cut off oxygen or blood flow to the brain, current across the chest can affect the heart, and suspension strains nerves and joints. Consensual non-consent carries emotional risk, because it blurs the usual signals on purpose. Many call this edge play: risk-aware, never fully safe.
How do you lower the risk?
Learn from experienced people or workshops, never from porn. Play sober, agree on a safeword and a non-verbal signal, and keep safety shears within reach. Never play alone with restraints or breath, and never press on the front of the throat. Some risks, like those of breath play, can’t be removed at all. If someone passes out, struggles to breathe or has chest pain, stop and call emergency services.
Which kinks need extra safety?
15Breath Play
Breath play is restricting or controlling a partner’s breathing for arousal or a sense of surrender, one of the most dangerous practices in kink, with no fully safe way to do it.
Choking
Choking during sex means putting pressure on a partner’s throat or neck with a hand, a high-risk practice that can cause serious injury or death.
Consensual Non-Consent
Consensual Non-Consent, or CNC, is a pre-negotiated scene where partners agree in advance to act out a lack of consent, so resistance is part of the script while real limits still apply.
Edge Play
Edge play is BDSM that deliberately approaches real physical or psychological limits, such as knife play, needles, fire or breath play, and needs serious skill and preparation.
Electro Stimulation
Electro stimulation, or e-stim, is using low-level electrical current from devices made for the body to create buzzing, tingling or stinging sensations on skin and muscles.
Face Slapping
Face slapping is a consensual open-hand slap to the cheek during sex or BDSM play, valued for its sting, its shock and its intense power dynamic.
Fear Play
Fear Play is consensual BDSM play that deliberately creates fear, through darkness, being hunted, horror roleplay or not knowing what comes next, for the adrenaline rush within agreed limits.
Fire Play
Fire Play is a form of edge play in which brief flashes of flame touch the skin, creating intense heat, adrenaline and a thrill of fear.
Fisting
Fisting is inserting the whole hand into a partner’s vagina or anus, a slow, advanced practice that needs patience, lots of lube and a great deal of trust.
Gagging
Gagging is covering or filling a partner’s mouth to stop them speaking, using a ball gag, a cloth or a hand, often to heighten helplessness during bondage.
Hogtie
A Hogtie is a bondage position where the wrists and ankles are tied together behind the back, usually with the bound partner lying face down and almost unable to move.
Mummification
Mummification is a bondage practice in which a partner’s whole body is wrapped in bandages, cling film or tape, leaving them completely still and helpless.
Self-Bondage
Self-Bondage is restraining yourself with rope, cuffs, tape or other gear for solo play, a practice that needs a guaranteed, tested way out every single time.
Suspension Bondage
Suspension Bondage is an advanced form of rope bondage in which a person is lifted partly or fully off the ground and held by ropes from a secure point above.
Urethral Sounding
Urethral Sounding is the practice of slowly inserting smooth, sterile rods called sounds into the urethra of a penis for intense internal stimulation.
