Sex Positions – What does Kama Sutra mean?
Kama Sutra
The Kama Sutra is an ancient Indian Sanskrit text on love, desire, relationships and the art of living, best known today for its descriptions of sex positions.
What does Kama Sutra mean?
Kama Sutra comes from Sanskrit, where “kama” means desire or pleasure and “sutra” means thread, and by extension a treatise or rulebook. It’s an ancient Indian text on love, desire and relationships, attributed to the philosopher Vatsyayana and usually dated to roughly the 3rd century CE. In Hindu thought, kama, the pursuit of pleasure, is one of the legitimate goals of life, alongside duty and prosperity. The Kama Sutra treats it as an art worth learning, much like music or painting.
Is the Kama Sutra just a book of sex positions?
No. Only a small part of the original deals with positions. Most of it is about courtship, attraction, marriage, partnership and living a cultured, pleasurable life. The image of the Kama Sutra as a position catalogue comes mostly from modern books that borrow the name. They’re fun for finding ideas, but they have little to do with the original text, which reads more like an ancient guide to love and manners.
What’s the difference between Kama Sutra and tantra?
The Kama Sutra is a single text about love, pleasure and relationships. Tantra is a much broader set of spiritual traditions within Hinduism and Buddhism. Classical tantra is mainly about meditation, ritual and spiritual practice, and sex plays only a small part in some branches. Modern Western tantra focuses on slow, mindful, connected sex, breathing and presence. The two often get mixed up in the West, but they come from quite different places.
