Kink Talk – What does Deepfake Porn mean?
Deepfake Porn
Deepfake porn is sexual images or videos made with AI that show a real person without their consent, for example by putting their face onto someone else’s body, and it is abuse.
What does Deepfake Porn mean?
“Deepfake” combines deep learning, a type of AI, with fake. The word goes back to a Reddit user who posted face-swapped porn of celebrities in 2017. Deepfake porn means sexual images or videos made with AI that show a real person without their consent. Today so-called nudify apps can turn any ordinary photo into a fake nude in seconds. Most deepfakes online are sexual, and most target women. The images are fake, but the harm is real: humiliation, fear, a damaged reputation and losing control over your own body.
Is deepfake porn illegal?
Making and sharing sexual deepfakes of real people without consent is abuse, whatever the law says. In Germany, sharing them can be prosecuted, for example as a violation of the right to your own image or as defamation, depending on the case. In 2024 the EU agreed that its member states must make sharing non-consensual sexual deepfakes a crime. The UK and the US have passed their own laws too.
What can you do if someone makes deepfake porn of you?
It is not your fault, and you did nothing to cause it. Save evidence, with links, screenshots, usernames and dates, before content disappears. Report it to every platform and ask for removal, many have special forms for intimate images. You can go to the police, and counselling services for victims of digital violence help with the next steps.
