Kink Talk – What is gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is a bacterial STI, also called the clap, that can infect the genitals, throat and rectum, often without symptoms, and is curable with antibiotics.
What is gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea comes from the Greek “gonos”, seed, and “rhoia”, flow, because ancient doctors mistook the discharge for leaking semen. It’s a bacterial STI, nicknamed the clap, that passes on during vaginal, anal and oral sex and can infect the genitals, rectum and throat. Throat infections are common and usually silent, so you can carry it after oral sex without any sign. Untreated, it can lead to inflammation of the pelvic organs or testicles and in some cases infertility. It often comes together with chlamydia, so doctors usually test for both.
What are the symptoms of gonorrhea?
Many people have none, especially in the throat and rectum. When symptoms appear, it’s usually within a few days to two weeks after sex. Typical signs are burning when you pee, yellowish or greenish discharge from the penis or vagina, bleeding between periods, and itching, pain or discharge from the anus. A throat infection sometimes causes a sore throat. A urine test or swabs from the genitals, throat and rectum show it, so tell your doctor which kinds of sex you’ve had.
Is gonorrhea curable?
Yes, with antibiotics from a doctor. But gonorrhea is getting better at resisting antibiotics, so treatment needs to follow current guidelines and should never be skipped or cut short. A follow-up test is often recommended, especially after a throat infection. Don’t have sex until you and your partners are treated and your doctor gives the all clear, and tell recent partners so they can get tested. Condoms, dental dams and condoms on shared toys lower your risk. A sexual health clinic or a local health office can help, often for free.
