Kink Talk – What are pubic lice?
Pubic Lice
Pubic lice are tiny insects that live in pubic and other coarse body hair, cause itching and spread through close body contact, usually during sex.
What are pubic lice?
Pubic comes from the Latin “pubes”, the hair of the groin, and lice is the plural of louse. They’re also called crabs, because under a magnifying glass they look like tiny crabs. Pubic lice are small insects that cling to coarse body hair and feed on tiny amounts of blood. Besides pubic hair they can live in chest hair, armpits, beards and occasionally eyelashes. Getting them has nothing to do with poor hygiene. Shaving and waxing trends may have made them rarer, but they still happen.
How do you know if you have pubic lice?
The main sign is itching in the genital area, often worse at night, starting a few days to weeks after contact. You may spot tiny pale brown insects, small eggs stuck to the hair, little bluish marks or dark specks in your underwear. They spread through close body contact, so condoms don’t protect, and less often through shared bedding, towels or clothes. Not sure? A doctor can check quickly.
How do you get rid of pubic lice?
Pubic lice are easy to treat with a special lotion or shampoo from the pharmacy. Follow the instructions closely, since a second round is often needed. Wash bedding, towels and clothes hot, or seal what you can’t wash in a bag for two weeks. Your partners should be treated at the same time, and skip close contact until you’re all done. If your eyelashes are affected, see a doctor instead of using shampoo. A full STI check is a good idea too.
