Kink Talk – What does Gaslighting mean?
Gaslighting
Gaslighting is a form of manipulation in which someone makes you doubt your own memory, feelings or perception of reality, until you trust them more than yourself.
What does gaslighting mean?
Gaslighting comes from the 1938 play “Gas Light” and its 1944 film version “Gaslight”, in which a husband secretly dims the gas lamps and then insists his wife is imagining it. Today it means manipulating someone until they doubt their own memory, feelings or reality. Over time, the person being gaslit stops trusting their own judgment and relies on the other person to tell them what’s real. In dating and kink it can show up as “that never happened” after a limit was crossed.
What are the signs of gaslighting?
Common signs are hearing “that never happened”, “you’re too sensitive” or “you’re remembering it wrong” again and again, until you start believing it. You might catch yourself apologising all the time, doubting your memory or writing things down just to feel sure. Your feelings get treated as the problem instead of what was done. Feeling confused and small around one person is a red flag worth taking seriously.
How is gaslighting different from a normal disagreement?
In a normal disagreement you both remember things differently and can talk it through. Gaslighting is a pattern where one person keeps denying your reality to gain control. If you suspect it, get an outside view from friends you trust, keep notes and notice how you feel after talking to that person. Counselling services and therapists can help you sort it out, and it’s not your fault if you were pulled in.
