Kink Talk – What does Exclusivity Talk mean?
Exclusivity Talk
Exclusivity Talk is the conversation where you agree whether you only have sex or a relationship with each other, or whether things are open to other people.
What does Exclusivity Talk mean?
Exclusive comes from the Latin “excludere”, to shut out, and in dating it means you’re only seeing each other. The Exclusivity Talk is where you agree whether that’s true or whether things stay open. In dating slang it’s also called the DTR talk, short for “define the relationship”. Many people assume they’re exclusive after a few dates while their partner assumes the opposite. Saying it out loud avoids that trap. It matters for feelings and for sexual health, since more partners means a different approach to testing and protection.
When should you have the exclusivity talk?
Have it as soon as it matters to you, and definitely before you stop using protection. There’s no fixed number of dates. Good moments are when you start to feel attached, when you want to delete the dating apps, or when one of you mentions someone else. Bring it up calmly and early, not in the middle of a jealous moment.
How do you ask if you’re exclusive?
Ask directly: “Are we seeing other people, or is this just us?” Share your own wish first so it doesn’t feel like a trap. If you want something open, say what that means for you, like casual sex only, play partners or other relationships. Agree on safer sex rules and how you’ll tell each other about new people, and revisit the deal when things change.
