Kink Talk – What does Stashing mean?
Stashing
Stashing, also called pocketing, means keeping a partner hidden from your friends, family and social media, so the relationship stays invisible to the rest of your life.
What does Stashing mean?
Stashing comes from the English verb “stash”, to hide something away, and pocketing works the same way, keeping someone tucked in your pocket. Both mean hiding a partner from your friends, family and social media. You might date for months without meeting anyone from their circle, never show up in a single photo, or get introduced as “a friend”. The relationship exists, just not in public.
Is stashing a red flag?
It can be, but not always. The reasons vary a lot. Some people are very private, aren’t sure yet where things are going, or have a family that wouldn’t accept the relationship. It becomes a red flag when it’s about hiding you, for example because they’re seeing someone else or are ashamed of you. Context and honesty make the difference.
How do you talk about stashing with a partner?
Say what you’ve noticed and how it feels, without accusing them. Something like “I’d love to meet your friends at some point, how do you feel about that?” opens the door. Listen to the reason and watch whether anything changes afterwards. A good reason comes with a plan, an excuse just repeats itself.
