BDSM Roles – What does Dominatrix mean?
Dominatrix
A dominatrix is a dominant woman in BDSM, often a professional who is paid to lead consensual scenes of control, discipline and fetish play with clients.
What does Dominatrix mean?
Dominatrix comes from Latin, where it is the feminine form of “dominator”, meaning a female ruler. It describes a dominant woman in BDSM, and today usually a professional who leads scenes for paying clients. Dominant women in private play more often call themselves Dommes, while dominatrix suggests the professional role, often with a studio, clear rules and a signature style. Many professional sessions don’t include sex at all. The focus is on power, ritual and sensation.
What does a dominatrix do?
A dominatrix takes control of a consensual scene, within limits agreed in advance with her client or partner. Depending on the agreement, that can mean bondage, impact play, humiliation, roleplay, chastity, foot worship or simply strict instructions. A good dominatrix starts with a conversation about limits and health, agrees on a safe word and keeps a close eye on the other person throughout.
What’s the difference between a dominatrix and a mistress?
Mistress is a title, dominatrix a role. Many dominatrices are addressed as Mistress, but not every Mistress is a professional. In private relationships, a dominant woman may use Mistress as her title without ever calling herself a dominatrix. The word dominatrix leans toward the professional scene and the classic image of leather, latex and rules.
