Kink Talk – What does Hard Limit mean?
Hard Limit
A hard limit is something a person will never do or have done to them, an absolute boundary that is not up for negotiation or persuasion.
What does Hard Limit mean?
Hard Limit is BDSM community language, built from the everyday word “limit” and the idea of a boundary that cannot bend. It means something a person will never do or have done to them, with no discussion. Hard limits are set before any scene, often with a yes, no, maybe list. Common ones include specific body parts, marks, bodily fluids or certain words. Anyone can have them, Dom or sub, and they don’t need a reason.
What’s the difference between a hard limit and a soft limit?
A hard limit is a firm no, a soft limit is a maybe that depends on the conditions. Soft limits can be explored slowly, with trust, the right mood or extra safety measures. Hard limits are never pushed, teased or “accidentally” crossed. If someone keeps trying to talk you out of a hard limit, that’s a red flag, not a negotiation.
How do you talk about hard limits with a partner?
Bring them up before you play, calmly and outside the bedroom. Writing a yes, no, maybe list each and comparing them makes it easy. Say your limits plainly, without having to justify them, and listen to your partner’s the same way. Limits can change over time, so revisit the list now and then.
