Kink Talk – What is mpox?
Mpox
Mpox is a viral infection that causes a rash or blisters and fever, spreads through close skin-to-skin contact including sex, and can be prevented with a vaccine.
What is mpox?
Mpox is the newer name for monkeypox, which was named that because the virus was first found in laboratory monkeys, even though rodents are thought to be its main animal hosts. In 2022 the WHO renamed it mpox to reduce stigma. Mpox is a viral infection related to smallpox, but usually much milder. Typical signs are a rash, spots or blisters that can hurt, often on the genitals, anus, mouth, hands or face, along with fever, swollen glands, headache and tiredness. Anyone can get it, whatever their gender or orientation.
How is mpox spread?
Mpox spreads mainly through close skin-to-skin contact with the rash or sores of someone who has it, which includes sex, kissing and cuddling. It can also pass on through shared bedding, towels or clothes and during long, close face-to-face contact. Because the virus sits on the skin, condoms don’t fully protect. The vaccine is recommended for people at higher risk, so ask your doctor or a sexual health clinic whether it fits you.
Is mpox curable?
Most people recover on their own within a few weeks, and doctors mainly treat the symptoms, such as pain. Antiviral medication exists for severe cases, for example in people with a weakened immune system. If you notice a new rash, see a doctor, who will test a swab from a sore. Until every sore has healed and new skin has formed, avoid sex and close contact, don’t share bedding or towels, and let recent partners know.
