Kink Talk – What does Performance Anxiety mean?
Performance Anxiety
Performance anxiety is worry about not being good enough in bed, about erections, orgasm, looks or lasting long enough, that pulls you out of the moment and blocks pleasure.
What does Performance Anxiety mean?
The term comes from stage fright, the fear of failing in front of an audience. Performance anxiety means worrying so much about how you’re doing in bed that the worry itself gets in the way. Typical thoughts: “What if I lose my erection?”, “Will I come?”, “Do I look okay?” Stress hormones then work against arousal, which can cause exactly what you feared. It’s very common, especially with new partners or after one bad experience.
How do you get over performance anxiety?
Take the pressure off. Agree that sex doesn’t have to include penetration or end in orgasm, and focus on touch and sensation instead. Sensate focus exercises from sex therapy were made for exactly this. Talk about it. Saying “I’m a bit nervous” often breaks the spell, and most partners respond kindly. Slow breathing helps when your head starts spinning, and so does comparing yourself less to porn.
When should you get help for performance anxiety?
If it lasts for months, keeps you from having sex or strains your relationship. A sex therapist or psychotherapist can help with the anxiety itself. If you still get erections in the morning or when masturbating, the cause is more likely in your head than in your body. If those are gone too, see a doctor to check for a physical cause.
