Kink Talk – What are safety shears?
Safety Shears
Safety shears are blunt-tipped scissors with an angled blade that cut rope, tape or straps fast in an emergency without stabbing or cutting the skin.
What are safety shears?
Safety Shears is the kink name for what paramedics call EMT shears or trauma shears. EMT stands for emergency medical technician, and these scissors were made to cut through clothing quickly without hurting the patient underneath. In bondage they cut rope, bondage tape or straps fast if someone needs out right now. The blunt, rounded tip slides between rope and skin, and the angled blade keeps the cut away from the body.
Why use safety shears instead of a knife?
A knife has a point and a sharp edge that can slip and cut skin, especially when someone is panicking, moving or tied tightly. Safety shears are built to slide under a tight line and cut it without stabbing, and they’re easy to use with shaky hands. Untying knots takes time, so in a real emergency like numbness, fainting or a panic attack, cutting is the fastest way out. Rope is cheaper than nerves.
Where should you keep safety shears during bondage?
Within arm’s reach, before you tie the first knot. If you have to go looking for them, they’re too far away. Many riggers keep them in a pocket, on a belt or right next to the bed. Test them on your rope beforehand, since thick or synthetic rope can be harder to cut. Make sure your partner knows where they are too, in case the person tying needs help.
