What does Suspension Bondage mean?
Suspension comes from the Latin “suspendere”, to hang up. Suspension Bondage is rope bondage in which a person is lifted partly or fully off the ground, held by ropes from a secure point above. It’s part of both Japanese-style shibari and Western rope bondage, and many see it as the most advanced level of rope play. A partial suspension keeps a foot or hip on the ground, a full suspension lifts the whole body. The person tying is called the rigger.
Is suspension bondage dangerous?
Yes, it’s one of the riskiest forms of rope play. Rope pressure on the arms and legs can damage nerves, sometimes for months, and a fall or a failing anchor point can cause serious injuries. Circulation problems, fainting and strain on the joints are further risks. That’s why experienced riggers treat suspension with a lot of respect, and why it’s never something to try on a whim after watching a video.
How do you get started with suspension safely?
Learn it hands-on from experienced riggers, in workshops or rope classes, and only after you’ve built solid skills tying on the floor. This is not something to teach yourself. The core principles stay the same at every level. Use only rated hard points made for suspension, never play alone, keep safety shears within reach and check in constantly. Numbness, tingling or weakness in the hands or feet means the person comes down right away.
