Kink Talk – What does Body Neutrality mean?
Body Neutrality
Body neutrality is the idea of accepting your body as it is and valuing what it does, without needing to love how it looks or think about it all the time.
What does Body Neutrality mean?
Body neutrality took off around 2015 as a response to body positivity. Instead of “love your body”, the message is “your body doesn’t have to be the topic”. It means accepting your body as it is and focusing on what it can do, feel and enjoy. On some days you’ll like how you look, on others you won’t, and that’s fine. Your worth and your right to pleasure don’t depend on it.
What’s the difference between body neutrality and body positivity?
Body positivity asks you to love and celebrate your body. Body neutrality only asks you to accept it and stop judging it. For many people, especially on bad days or with chronic illness, disability or dysphoria, constant self-love feels like one more standard to fail. Neutral is easier to reach. Body positivity has roots in fat activism and still matters. Both can exist side by side.
How does body neutrality help your sex life?
Worrying about how you look during sex pulls you out of the moment, which therapists call spectatoring. Body neutrality shifts your attention from looks to sensations. Try focusing on touch, warmth, breath and what feels good instead of angles and rolls. It’s also fine to tell a partner which body parts you’d rather not have commented on, and to leave the light on or off as you like.
