Relationship Styles – What does Sologamy mean?
Sologamy
Sologamy is marrying yourself in a symbolic ceremony, a public commitment to self-love and your own path that has no legal effect but can mean a lot to the person.
What does Sologamy mean?
Sologamy blends the Latin “solus”, alone, with the Greek “gamos”, marriage. It means marrying yourself in a symbolic ceremony, sometimes with a dress, rings, vows and guests, sometimes quietly on your own. Self-weddings have made headlines since the 1990s and became a small trend in the 2010s. For many people it’s a way to celebrate self-worth, mark a new chapter after a breakup or reject the idea that life only counts once someone else chooses you.
Is sologamy legally binding?
No. In Germany and practically everywhere else, marriage needs two people, so a self-marriage has no legal effect on taxes, names or inheritance. That’s part of the point for many: it’s a personal ritual, not a legal status. Some people book a celebrant for a full ceremony, others write vows alone at home.
Can you date or have sex if you’ve married yourself?
Yes. Sologamy usually isn’t a vow of celibacy or a promise never to have a partner. Many sologamists date, have sex, fall in love or later marry someone else. The commitment is to treat yourself with the same care, respect and loyalty you’d promise a spouse. In that sense it fits well with solo poly people and anyone stepping off the classic relationship escalator.
