Kink Talk – What does Hoovering mean?
Hoovering
Hoovering is when an ex or manipulative partner tries to suck you back into a relationship you left or pulled away from, often with charm, guilt or sudden crises.
What does Hoovering mean?
Hoovering is named after the vacuum cleaner brand Hoover, whose name became a verb for vacuuming in British English. The image is being sucked back in. It describes an ex or manipulative partner trying to pull you back into a relationship you left or stepped away from. The term became common in online talk about toxic and abusive relationships. It usually shows up after a breakup, or when you set a boundary and start to create distance.
What are typical hoovering tactics?
Common ones are sudden sweet messages, big apologies and promises that everything will be different now. Others are less obvious, like birthday greetings, a text sent “by accident”, a crisis only you can help with, guilt trips or reaching out through friends. The pattern is the same. Once you’re back, the old behaviour usually returns.
How do you deal with hoovering?
Decide on your boundary and stick to it. For many people that means low or no contact, including muting or blocking. You don’t owe anyone a reply or a long explanation. Tell friends you trust what’s going on, so they don’t pass on messages. If you feel unsafe, or the contact turns into pressure or threats, get support from a counselling service or the police.
