Orientations & Identities – What does gender identity mean?
Gender Identity
Gender identity is your inner sense of your own gender, whether that is man, woman, both, neither or something else, regardless of the sex you were assigned at birth.
What does gender identity mean?
Gender comes from the Latin “genus”, meaning kind or type, and the phrase gender identity has been used in psychology since the 1960s. It means your inner sense of your own gender, whether that is man, woman, both, neither or something else. Nobody else can see or assign it. It’s about who you know yourself to be, not about your body, your clothes or who you’re attracted to. For cis people it matches the sex they were assigned at birth, for trans and many non-binary people it doesn’t.
What’s the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation?
Gender identity is about who you are, sexual orientation is about who you’re attracted to. The two are independent of each other. A trans woman can be straight, lesbian or bi, just like a cis woman. Knowing someone’s gender tells you nothing about who they love, and the other way round. Romantic orientation, meaning who you fall in love with, is yet another layer.
What’s the difference between gender identity and gender expression?
Gender identity is your inner sense of gender, gender expression is how you show it to the world. Expression covers clothes, hair, voice, makeup and mannerisms, and it can be feminine, masculine, androgynous or a mix that changes from day to day. Then there’s the sex assigned at birth, the label given based on your body. All three can line up or differ, and none of them tells you the others for sure.
