Kink Talk – What does Ecchi mean?
Ecchi
Ecchi is a genre of anime, manga and games with playful, suggestive content such as fan service and teasing situations, but without explicit sex, which sets it apart from hentai.
What does Ecchi mean?
Ecchi comes from the Japanese pronunciation of the letter H, “etchi”, the first letter of the word hentai. In Japanese it’s a casual word for naughty or sexy. Internationally, ecchi means anime, manga and games that are suggestive but not explicit. Typical ecchi includes revealing outfits, camera angles that linger, accidental falls into compromising poses and lots of blushing. The tension is the point, not the payoff.
What’s the difference between ecchi and hentai?
Ecchi teases, hentai shows. Ecchi stays below the line of explicit sex and often appears in mainstream series. Hentai is explicit, pornographic anime or manga. Confusingly, in Japan “hentai” mostly means pervert or perverted, and the explicit genre usually goes by other names there. Outside Japan the two words have become a scale from spicy to explicit.
Can ecchi be part of your sex life?
Sure. Many people enjoy the playful, teasing mood of ecchi and borrow it for cosplay, flirting or a slow build-up with a partner. Like any fantasy, it’s about consenting adults playing a role together. And mark ecchi art or clips as NSFW when you share them, since not everyone wants to see them on a crowded train.
