Kink Talk – What does Hypersexuality mean?
Hypersexuality
Hypersexuality describes sexual urges, fantasies or behaviour that feel out of control, take up a lot of time and continue despite causing real distress or harm in someone’s life.
What does Hypersexuality mean?
Hypersexuality comes from the Greek “hyper”, meaning over or beyond. It describes sexual urges or behaviour that feel out of control and keep going even when they cause distress or harm. In everyday language people often call it sex addiction. Since 2022, the WHO’s disease classification lists compulsive sexual behaviour disorder as an impulse control disorder. Whether it should be called an addiction is still debated among experts.
Is a high sex drive the same as hypersexuality?
No. Wanting a lot of sex, masturbating daily or having many partners is not a disorder in itself. What matters is control and harm, not frequency. Warning signs are failed attempts to cut down, neglecting work, relationships or health, and using sex mainly to escape stress or bad feelings, with little pleasure left. Feeling guilty because your desire clashes with strict values is something else, and shame alone doesn’t make it compulsive.
Where can you get help with hypersexuality?
Talk to a GP, a psychotherapist or a sex therapist, ideally one who is kink-aware and doesn’t judge. Therapy, often cognitive behavioural therapy, helps many people regain control. Sometimes hypersexuality is linked to other conditions, like bipolar disorder, or to certain medications, so a medical check makes sense. You are not broken, and asking for help is a strong step, not a confession.
