Kink Talk – What does Mindful Sex mean?
Mindful Sex
Mindful sex is the practice of staying fully present in your body during sex, noticing touch, breath and sensation without judging them or chasing a goal like orgasm.
What does Mindful Sex mean?
Mindful sex applies mindfulness, a practice with roots in Buddhist meditation, to intimacy. It means staying with what you feel right now, skin, breath, warmth and arousal, instead of thinking about your to-do list or how you look. It isn’t a special technique or position. You can bring it into any kind of sex, solo or together, fast or slow. Sex therapists use it a lot, and research suggests it can help with low desire, arousal problems and anxiety around sex.
How do you practise mindful sex?
Start slowly. Take a few deep breaths together, then focus on one sense at a time: how your partner’s skin feels, how they smell, what you hear. When your mind wanders, and it will, notice it without judging and gently bring your attention back to a sensation. Taking orgasm off the table for a while helps a lot. Solo practice works just as well, for example a slow, curious masturbation session without porn.
How is mindful sex different from tantra or slow sex?
They overlap. Slow sex is about pace, and tantra is a spiritual tradition with its own rituals, breathing techniques and philosophy. Mindful sex is simpler: it’s about where your attention goes. You can be mindful during a quickie, and you can have slow sex while your mind is somewhere else. Many people combine all three.
