Kink Talk – What does Low Libido mean?
Low Libido
Low libido means having little or no sexual desire, either for a while or long term, and it only becomes a problem when it bothers you or strains your relationship.
What does Low Libido mean?
Libido is Latin for desire or longing, and Sigmund Freud made it the word for sexual drive. Low libido means having little or no interest in sex, either for a phase or over a longer time. Desire naturally rises and falls with stress, sleep, age, hormones and how things are going in your relationship. Feeling less horny than others is not a disorder in itself. It becomes a topic when you miss your desire or the difference with a partner causes pain.
What causes low libido?
Often several things at once. Common causes are stress, exhaustion, depression or anxiety, relationship conflict, pain during sex, body image worries and big life changes like a new baby. Medication can play a role too, for example some antidepressants, blood pressure drugs or hormonal contraception. So can hormonal changes such as low testosterone, menopause or thyroid problems. If your desire drops suddenly or clearly for no obvious reason, see a doctor to check for a physical cause.
Is low libido the same as being asexual?
No. Asexuality is an orientation: little or no sexual attraction, and many asexual people are perfectly happy that way. Low libido is about drive, and it often changes over time. Many people with low libido have responsive desire: it shows up once things start, not out of the blue. Knowing that can take a lot of pressure off. Talking openly with a partner or a sex therapist helps more than waiting for desire to come back on its own.
