Kink Talk – What does Squick mean?
Squick
Squick is slang for a strong “ew, not for me” reaction to someone else’s kink, a personal gut feeling that says nothing bad about the kink itself.
What does squick mean?
Squick comes from online fandom slang and is usually explained as a blend of “squeak” and “ick”. It describes a strong “ew, not for me” reaction to someone else’s kink or fantasy. Kink communities picked it up because it names a feeling without judging anyone. You might say “that one squicks me” about a fetish you find off-putting, while knowing it’s perfectly fine for the people who enjoy it.
Is it okay to have squicks?
Yes, everyone has them, and you never have to explain or overcome them. The line is kink-shaming. Feeling squicked is fine, mocking or attacking people for their kink is not. The community phrase “your kink is not my kink, and that’s okay”, short YKINMK, sums it up nicely. Scroll past, change the topic or say it’s not for you, without making anyone feel weird.
What’s the difference between a squick and a hard limit?
A squick is a gut reaction to a kink in general, often one you’d never consider anyway. A hard limit is something you won’t do in your own play, no matter what, and you state it during negotiation. Many squicks are also hard limits, but not every hard limit is a squick. You can find something perfectly fine to read about or see others enjoy and still never want it for yourself.
