Kinks & Fetishes – What does Gender Play mean?
Gender Play
Gender Play is consensual play with gender roles during sex or a scene, from swapping your usual roles and cross-dressing to strap-on play or using different names and pronouns.
What does Gender Play mean?
Gender Play is a kink community term for exploring gender in an erotic setting. It covers anything from swapping your usual roles in bed to cross-dressing, wearing a strap-on or being called by a different name and pronouns during a scene. For some it’s playful and light, a fun break from the usual script. For others it’s deeply affirming, and some people find that gender play helps them explore their own gender identity, sometimes before they have words for it.
What’s the difference between gender play and forced feminization?
Gender play is the broad umbrella. It can go in any direction, for any gender, with or without a power dynamic, and the focus is exploration and enjoyment. Forced feminization is a specific scene in which a dominant partner “makes” a man look and act feminine, usually with humiliation as part of the appeal. It can be one form of gender play, but most gender play involves no humiliation at all.
How do you do gender play respectfully?
Talk beforehand about what you want to try, such as clothes, names, pronouns and toys, and what’s off limits. Words that turn one person on may hurt another, especially when they touch on someone’s real body or identity. Never use gender play to mock someone’s real gender identity, and never out anyone because of what happened in a scene. If a scene stirs up bigger questions about your own gender, that’s okay, and a queer-friendly counselor can help you sort through them.
