Orientations & Identities – What does stealth mean?
Stealth
Stealth describes trans people who live in their gender without the people around them knowing they’re trans, deciding for themselves who, if anyone, learns about their history.
What does stealth mean?
Stealth comes from the English word for moving unseen. In trans communities, living or “going” stealth means living as your gender without others knowing that you’re trans. Colleagues, neighbours and new friends simply know you as who you are. The opposite is being out or visible. Many people mix both: openly trans with close friends, stealth at work. Stealth often goes hand in hand with passing, and some people move to a new place after transition to start fresh.
Is living stealth lying?
No. Trans history is private, much like medical information. Nobody owes others details about their body, past or treatment. People go stealth for safety, to avoid discrimination or simply to live without explaining themselves. In dating, whether and when to share is a personal decision. Many tell a partner before things get serious, in a setting where they feel safe. Telling others that someone is trans against their will is outing and can cause real harm.
Is stealth the same as stealthing?
No. Stealthing means secretly removing or damaging a condom during sex without the partner’s consent. It is sexual violence, and German courts have ruled that it can be punished as a sexual offence. The two terms only share the word “stealth”, meaning hidden. Living stealth as a trans person is about privacy, stealthing is about breaking consent.
