Kink Talk – What does Semen Retention mean?
Semen Retention
Semen retention is the practice of deliberately avoiding ejaculation for long periods, sometimes while still having sex or orgasms, in the belief that keeping semen brings health or energy benefits.
What does Semen Retention mean?
Semen retention means holding back semen, in other words not ejaculating, on purpose. The idea has roots in Taoist and tantric traditions, which saw semen as precious life energy. Today it’s widely promoted on social media. Some practitioners avoid all sexual release, others still have sex or masturbate but stop before ejaculating, and some try to have orgasms without ejaculating. Pressing on the perineum during orgasm, a technique sometimes taught for this, doesn’t keep semen in the body though. It flows into the bladder and leaves with urine.
Does semen retention have proven benefits?
Not really. Claims about more energy, confidence, focus or a magnetic attraction to others lack scientific evidence. Short abstinence can briefly raise testosterone levels a little, but no lasting effect is known. Unused sperm are simply broken down by the body, and wet dreams can happen. It’s harmless if you choose it freely and feel good with it. It becomes a problem when it’s driven by shame about sex, or by the idea that ejaculating makes you weaker.
What’s the difference between semen retention, edging and dry orgasm?
Edging means stopping just before orgasm again and again, usually to make the final orgasm stronger. Semen retention is about not ejaculating at all, sometimes for weeks or months. A dry orgasm is an orgasm without ejaculation, which can be trained or have medical causes. Some people who practise semen retention aim for exactly that, but the terms describe different things.
