Orientations & Identities – What does t4t mean?
T4T
T4T, short for trans for trans, describes trans people who date, desire or form relationships with other trans people, and more broadly a sense of solidarity within trans communities.
What does T4T mean?
T4T comes from the shorthand of online personal ads, where “m4m” meant a man looking for a man and “w4m” a woman looking for a man. T4T means trans for trans: a trans person looking for other trans people, romantically or sexually. Beyond dating, many use T4T for a wider idea: trans people supporting, hiring, housing and caring for each other. In that sense it’s as much about community as about romance.
Why do some trans people prefer T4T?
Shared experience is a big reason. You don’t have to explain dysphoria, hormones, name changes or why a certain touch doesn’t feel right. Many also feel safer, because the risk of being fetishised, rejected or outed is lower. In bed, it can feel easier to talk openly about which words and touches feel good, because both partners already know that this differs from person to person.
Do trans people only date other trans people?
No. T4T is a preference, not a rule. Many trans people happily date cis partners, and others date both trans and cis people. If you’re cis and interested in a trans person, see them as a whole person, not as a fantasy or a type. Ask what they like instead of assuming, and don’t make their body the main topic.
