Kink Talk – What does Fertility Awareness mean?
Fertility Awareness
Fertility awareness is a hormone-free way to find your fertile days by tracking body signs like waking temperature and cervical mucus, then avoiding sex or using condoms on those days.
What does Fertility Awareness mean?
The term means what it says: being aware of when you’re fertile. Fertility awareness methods track signs of the menstrual cycle to find the fertile window, the days around ovulation when sex can lead to pregnancy. Sperm can survive in the body for up to about 5 days, so the window starts before ovulation. The best-studied version is the symptothermal method. You take your temperature every morning before getting up and observe your cervical mucus, and set rules combine both signs. On fertile days you skip vaginal sex or use condoms.
How reliable is fertility awareness?
The symptothermal method can be quite reliable when you learn it properly, for example in a course, and follow the rules strictly. With typical use, when rules get bent or signs misread, it’s much less reliable. The calendar method, which only counts days, and cycle apps that just predict from past periods are not reliable. Stress, illness, alcohol, poor sleep or shift work can throw off your temperature. Irregular cycles, breastfeeding or coming off hormonal contraception make it harder too.
Is fertility awareness right for you?
It can suit you if you want to avoid hormones, have fairly regular cycles and enjoy getting to know your body. It takes a few cycles to learn, daily discipline and a partner who shares the responsibility. It offers no protection against STIs. If a pregnancy would be a big problem for you right now, a more reliable method may fit better. A gynecologist or family planning service can help you weigh it up.
