Toys & Props – What does Arousal Gel mean?
Arousal Gel
Arousal gel is a gel applied to the clitoris or other sensitive spots that creates a warming, cooling or tingling sensation to boost sensitivity during solo play or sex.
What does Arousal Gel mean?
Arousal gel is a plain description: a gel meant to heighten arousal. You put a small drop on the clitoris, and ingredients like menthol, peppermint oil or capsaicin, the compound that makes chili hot, create a warming, cooling or tingling feeling. Some products also contain L-arginine, an amino acid said to boost blood flow, though the evidence for that is thin. Most are made for the clitoris, some for nipples or the penis. The effect differs a lot from person to person.
Is arousal gel safe?
For most people, yes, if you start small. Test a little on the skin of your inner arm first, then use a pea-sized drop or less. Menthol and capsaicin can sting on mucous membranes, so keep it away from the inside of the vagina, the anus and the eyes unless the product says otherwise. Skip it on broken or irritated skin and during an infection, and rinse it off with water if it burns. Check the label before using it with condoms, since oil-based gels can damage latex.
Can arousal gel replace lube or boost desire?
No. You only use a tiny amount, and it isn’t made to make things slippery, so add a separate lube for penetration or longer play. Water-based lube is the safe bet with most gels. It also has no medical effect on desire. It can make touch feel more intense, but if you’ve lost interest in sex or have trouble getting aroused, talking to a gynecologist or doctor helps more than any gel.
