Kink Talk – What does Queef mean?
Queef
A queef is air escaping from the vagina with an audible sound, usually during or after penetration, completely harmless and unrelated to digestion or bad smells.
What does Queef mean?
Queef is English slang of unclear origin for air that escapes from the vagina with a sound. A penis, fingers, toys or certain movements push air in, and when the vaginal walls close again, it comes back out. It has nothing to do with the bowels, so a queef doesn’t smell. It happens to many people with a vagina, especially in doggy style or with the legs up high, after changing positions, and sometimes during yoga or sports.
How do you handle a queef during sex?
Laugh it off, or ignore it and keep going. It’s a sign of nothing except physics, and your partner has very likely heard one before. If it makes you tense, saying it out loud often breaks the tension: “That was air, carry on.” Partners help most by not making a big deal of it.
Can you prevent queefing?
Not completely, but you can make it less frequent. Slower, shallower thrusts, fewer full pull-outs and staying inside when you change positions let in less air. Positions with the hips raised high tend to trap more. Some people find that pelvic floor training makes a difference. If air from the vagina ever smells like stool, or something feels wrong after giving birth, see a gynecologist.
