Orientations & Identities – What does egg mean?
Egg
Egg is internet slang, used mostly in trans communities, for a person who is trans but hasn’t realised it or come out yet, often something people only recognise in hindsight.
What does egg mean?
The term comes from the image of an egg that hasn’t hatched yet. When someone realises they’re trans, people say their egg has “cracked”. So an egg is a trans person who hasn’t realised it or come out yet. Many trans people look back and spot their egg moments: a fascination with gender-swap stories, envy of friends of another gender, or jokes about wanting to be another gender that weren’t really jokes. Communities like “egg_irl” share these memes with a lot of warmth and humour.
Is it okay to call someone an egg?
Calling yourself an egg, or a former egg, is common and usually affectionate. Calling someone else one is different. Guessing that another person is secretly trans can feel pushy and invasive, and you might simply be wrong. Everyone discovers their identity in their own time. If someone wants to explore gender with you, listen, ask open questions and let them choose the words.
How do you know if you’re an egg?
There’s no test. People often describe feeling uneasy with how others see them, loving being read as another gender online or in games, or feeling a quiet “yes” when they imagine living as another gender. Questioning doesn’t lock you into anything. Some find out they’re trans, some land on non-binary, others stay cis and know themselves better. Trans friends or a queer counselling service can help you sort your thoughts.
