Kink Talk – What does Contraceptive Injection mean?
Contraceptive Injection
A contraceptive injection is a progestin shot from a doctor, given about every 12 weeks, that stops ovulation and is very reliable as long as each shot is on time.
What does Contraceptive Injection mean?
The name is literal: contraception given as an injection. A doctor injects a progestin into a muscle or under the skin, and it stops ovulation for about three months. In German it’s simply called the “three-month shot”. Once you’ve had the shot, there’s nothing to remember until the next appointment, which makes it very reliable when the shots are on time. The main thing is not to miss the next date. If you’re late, you may need backup contraception, so ask your doctor.
How long does it take to get pregnant after stopping the shot?
Often longer than with other methods. Unlike the pill or an IUD, the shot can’t be stopped right away, it simply wears off. It can take several months, sometimes a year or more, until ovulation returns. So it’s a poor choice if you’d like to get pregnant soon. Fertility does come back, it just takes patience.
What are the side effects of the contraceptive injection?
Irregular bleeding and spotting are common, and over time many people stop bleeding altogether. Weight gain, headaches and mood changes are possible too. With long-term use the shot can lower bone density, which mostly recovers after stopping. That’s why doctors often see it as an option for people who can’t use other methods well, rather than a first choice. It doesn’t protect against STIs, so use condoms with new partners.
